When it comes to Stanley Cup success, no team has fared better than the Montreal Canadiens. Montreal (or the “Habs”) have won 24 cups, nearly double the Maple Leafs’ second-best record of 13. That said, neither team has experienced much success in the modern NHL, with the Habs’ most recent victory coming in 1993 and the Maple Leafs’ latest championship coming in 1967.

Following an initial championship in 1916, Montreal won its first Stanley Cup Finals of the NHL era in 1924. The team then won back-to-back titles in 1927 and 1928. Beginning in 1944, Montreal reached 13 Stanley Cup Finals in 17 years, winning eight. This included five straight championships between 1956 and 1960, bringing the franchise’s total to 12.

The team’s success did not end abruptly, with the Habs adding 10 more Stanley Cup victories between 1965 and 1979, capped by a run of four straight championships. The franchise added two more Stanley Cup victories in 1986 and 1993.

Since the last Canadiens’ championship in 1993, the Detroit Red Wings have won four titles in six attempts, while the Tampa Bay Lightning and New Jersey Devils have both won three Stanley Cup Finals.
